Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Bois de Boursan, 2018 France

$98.00

The fruit for this wine is sourced from 35-115 year, Gobelet trained vines in the La Nerthe, Blaquiers, Chemin de Sorgues, Font du Pape, Nalys, Saint Georges, Cabrières, and Pieds de Bauds lieux-dits in Châteauneuf du Pape. Harvest is entirely manual, usually in late September to early October

The classic red of the domaine accounts for approximately 85% of the annual production of the estate. Following 10% destemming, wine ferments spontaneously in concrete vats (70%) and stainless-steel tanks (30%). Cuvaison lasts 20-25 days. Grapes are pressed in a vertical basket press. The wine is racked off of its lees following spontaneous fermentation, including malolactic. The wine is aged for 24 months in neutral oak foudres and is bottled without fining or filtration.

This wine has superb energy and an incredible length of flavor. The nose is complex, which expresses floral notes, red and black berry fruit, thyme, honey and lavender. There’s a sense of controlled wildness here that embodies the house style even more forcefully than in most vintages, with a silky entry leading to a finish of notable but extremely fine tannins which dance across the tongue. Though it is remarkably seductive for a young Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this should blossom with time in bottle as all of Jean-Paul’s wines tend to.

Bois de Boursan Tradition is produced from a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah and 5% other varieties. The vines for this wine range from 40-80 years of age.
